02/05/06 - Boyfriend Killed After Deputies Don't Respond To 911 Call.
A woman said her estranged husband killed her boyfriend after Lee
County sheriff's deputies failed to respond to her 911 call reporting
he had shown up in violation of a no-contact order.
The sheriff's office said Ruthie Mendez, 29, didn't give deputies
enough information to act, and computer problems prevented them from
finding the order.
Mendez called 911 on Wednesday night and told the operator her husband,
Pedro Mendez-Morales, 31, had just been at her home with a gun. She
said he was under a court order not to contact her.
No deputy responded, and Mendez called back a half-hour later to say
her husband had shot her boyfriend, Miguel Angel Cobos-Gonzalez, 17, a
few hundred feet from her home.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Ileana LiMarzi said authorities didn't respond
because they couldn't find Mendez-Morales' name in the computer system
that tracks no-contact orders. She said the woman gave her husband's
name as Mendez, and it was in the system as Mendez-Morales.
The Fort Myers News-Press reported that Mendez-Morales was arrested Thursday night in Largo.
"He was picked up by our guys with the assistance of the Pinellas
County Sheriff's Office," Lee County sheriff's spokesman Angelo Vaughn
said.
Mendez-Morales has been charged with first-degree murder. |
