Award represents a 60 percent increase over last year’s funding
 ANNOUNCEMENT:

ATLANTA, December 19, 2007 – The Avon Foundation has awarded a $40,000 one-year grant to metro Atlanta’s Partnership Against Domestic Violence to provide lifesaving services to domestic violence survivors and their children. The Avon Foundation has supported PADV for close to a decade. This award represents a 60 percent increase over last year’s funding. The grant is part of an annual program of Avon Products, Inc. and the Avon Foundation that invites Avon regional branch offices across the US to nominate worthwhile local non-profit organizations for funding under the Avon Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program. PADV is the only recipient of an Avon Foundation grant in the Atlanta metro area.

PADV operates a 24-hour crisis line and two emergency shelters, the only two state certified facilities operating in the city of Atlanta and Gwinnett County. The largest and one of the oldest nonprofit domestic violence organizations in Georgia, PADV offers legal advocacy; support groups for women and children; parenting classes; children and youth programs; transitional housing; assistance in obtaining public benefits; permanent housing; childcare; employment training and access to free medical services to correct facial injuries caused by domestic violence.

Last year, PADV fielded 17,794 calls into its crisis lines; sheltered 667 battered women and their children and provided more than 79,000 supportive services to 1,360 domestic violence survivors.

These vital services are particularly important in metro Atlanta because Georgia ranks seventh in the nation in the rate of men killing women with handguns. Consider these facts:

     * In Georgia, 30 percent of women and girls will be abused by their partners at least once.
     * Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women and girls in Georgia.
     * One in three women will experience domestic violence.
     * Intimate partner violence results in 2 million injuries every year.

“We are proud that the Avon Foundation shares our mission and has chosen to support our program. With these funds PADV will be able to provide shelter, clothing, food and support to battered women and their children, and help survivors build life-sustaining skills so that they can rebuild their lives and break the cycle of domestic violence for themselves, their families, and future generations,” said Cathy Willis Spraetz, president & chief executive officer of PADV.

Since the launch of the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program in 2004, the Avon Foundation has awarded more than 300 grants totaling over $6 million to domestic violence organizations across the United States.

“The Avon Foundation is committed to help end the cycle of domestic violence and is proud to support PADV in its work to help survivors in metro Atlanta” said Carol Kurzig, Executive Director, Avon Foundation. “It is through the combination of local and national efforts that we can work to eradicate domestic violence and ensure safety for all women and families.”
